Lisa asked Tom: "How did this morning's sendoff go?" Tom writes: Pretty well. James went pee on the potty right after waking up. Full bladder. Actually, first he called me from his bed, but did not want to get out of bed for 20 minutes. Then pee. Then refused to put on Pull Ups. I got lucky though. I offered him the nighttime Pull Ups or daytime Pull ups, talking up the daytime ones. He bought it. Same thing with track pants vs. jeans. Actually, I did not talk up the track pants, but he really avoids the jeans. He refused to change his shirt. Not for Superman, not for dinosaurs. So he went to daycare with a dirty shirt. I got one of the blue sneakers on him, no problem, but he wasn't not watching. When I went to put on the second one, it was a no go. So he has his new shoes on. He sat on the potty a second time for chocolate and was determined to work at it until he succeeded, which he did.

James has figured it out

Tom writes: Dear Lisa, James did not want to wake up. At all. Still asleep, he was holding on to the bars of his crib so I could not get him up. But finally he did arise at around 8:30. I went to change his diaper, but before I put the new one on, he announced, "pipi". And got a chocolate. Then after a few bites of egg and some milk for breakfast, "pipi". And more chocolate. And off we were to Sandy's...almost. Just after the shoes went on, "pipi". And more chocolate. He may be working the system! And certainly ready for pull-ups. Love, Tom

Silly faces

Lisa writes: A friend who hasn't seen James for a while asked if I had any pictures of him on my phone. These are the first pictures that came up. This is one silly kid.   (We're at the Will Rogers Shrine in Colorado Springs.)

Head Start with Esme and Quetzi

Image
Lisa writes: Kellen invited us to come to Esme and Quetzi's preschool. If a parent volunteers in the classroom, another kid can attend for free that day. We were impressed by how organized the program was and what good classroom control the teachers had. Tom and I taught Primary for six years and, uh, yeah, our class was never as peaceful and compliant as these kiddos.   They named a tree and will be watching it through the seasons. Several kids suggested names and then they voted. Esme's suggestion, "Coco," won.

I'm sitting on a jet plane / Don't know if I'll ever get off again

Lisa writes: Flew from D.C. to Colorado Springs and arrived 30 minutes early! And there were no gates available! And we sat on the runway for an hour! Yay!

Fly me to the moon

Tom writes: Heard on the living room couch this morning: Dada: ¿Adónde quieres ir?  ¿A la luna?  ( Where do you want to go?  To the moon? ) James: ¡Yeah! Dada: ¿Cómo? ( How? ) James: ¡En avión!  ( By plane! ) Elon Musk, get ready.

Chocolate!

Image
Lisa writes: For months, we've been offering James "one chocolate" for using the potty. The chocolate has sat untouched. And then today Tom texted me this: "Had to open the chocolate"

I can see clearly now the rain is gone

Tom writes: The time has arrived, the time the ophthalmologist predicted over twenty years ago when I retired the bifocals I had worn kindergarten thought college.  The small print has gotten too small, so I went to CVS to check out reading glasses.  James decided he needed to try them out, too.
