We´re in Brazil

Lisa writes: We are in Brazil. We got up at 3 a.m. to fly from DC to Miami yesterday. Got stuck for an extra 3 hours in the Miami airport when the flight was delayed. Worked on my homework to kill the time. The flight itself was on a huge plane and half empty -- which was fantastic. People could commandeer entire an entire row and lie down and sleep. They kept feeding us. We arrived in Sao Paolo at midnight, local time. So, 18 hours from end to end.

We slept in this morning.

We´re staying with Elison Santos, a good friend of Tom´s from his church ministry days. He and his wife and two little boys (2 and 4) have an apartment in Taubate, about an hour from the airport. He picked us up in his Renault station wagon. We drove here in the dark, so I couldn´t see much, but we passed lots of little cinder block houses in the hills and the Rio Negro iron factory. Arriving in town at 2 a.m., the little street-side bars and restaurants were still full of patrons. Friday night in Taubate!

Like the U.S., it´s an election year in Brazil. All of the local mayor´s seats are up for vote. Besides flooding the tv and radio with ads, they hire trucks with big speaker systems to cruise the streets, singing (literally) the candidates praises.

We can´t figure out how the plumbing works in this apartment building and took very dynamically temperatured showers last night.
