Happy New Year from Tizimín

Happy New Year from the little town of Tizimín, about two hours from Mérida. It's famous for having a big Three Kings Day Fair this whole week, so we're here to check it out. Here are the boys in the central plaza.

These star-shaped piñatas are popular around Christmas time. The shape is, variously, supposed to represent the seven deadly sins (that you beat to death with a stick) or the star of Bethlehem (that you beat to death with a stick?). I feel like you'd got to chose one or the other there, guys. Anyway.

Another fun Yucatecan tradition is El Viejo. This is sort of the Yuca equivalent of these old comics:

El Viejo represents the old year as an old man made of paper mache and old clothes and stuffed with newspaper and firecrackers. Guess what happens to him at midnight?

(Yes, he gets blown up.) We didn't get to see this in person because we were in bed by 9:30. The boys were tired and starting to fall apart and pushing through to the new year didn't sound as fun as getting a good night's sleep.
