Marriage: Month Four
Luckily, he came back for more, and I am happy to report that after four months, I'm still not sick of him. My mom hit it right on the head a little while ago: Tom has a very "healing presence." He makes me happy always.
Tom writes: Everyone tells us that the honeymoon will end at some point. However, it seems that we haven't hit that point. Either that, or we have transitioned from "really, really happy" to just "really happy" and will stay like this forever and ever. Hey - it works in fairy tales!
Tom continues: More seriously, though, it has become clearer to me what they mean when they say that love is a decision you make, and must continuously make. When something comes up, you can either choose to let it isolate you from your spouse, or you can choose to find a way to work through it. Another thing that is getting even more obvious than before: I landed an excellent wife; it is easy, comforting, and even joy-filled to be with Lisa. And if I may be so bold as to offer one technique that has worked so well for us so far (I hate preaching, but sometimes you just gotta say it like it is): pray together before you go to bed. It is really hard to be open with God and be holding anything against your spouse. Fortunately, things that harden your heart do not withstand honest prayer very well at all. If the prayers do soften your heart the first night, rarely can those hard spots endure past the second night.
